David Fuller Elected Detachment Commander

David Fuller was elected the new Detachment Commander at the 2021 Summer Convention.  David is a member of Squadron 209 located in Orfordville WI.

David follows Robert Sirovina Jr who was Commander from July 2019 through July 2021.  Commander Bob had a very successful and productive 2 years in office despite the impacts of COVID-19 during his second term.  During he tenure the Detachment was over 100% in Membership both years, achieved Triple Nickel Status one year (105% membership, 85% renewal, 5 new squadrons), and supported Homeless Veterans through Commander Bob’s Commander’s Project.

One key goal Commander Fuller has set for the Detachment over the next year is more engagement with all the Squadrons within Wisconsin.  A lot is changing within the Organization, the Detachment will be here to inform and supporting the Squadrons through these changes.

One other goal, through his Commander’s Project, will be to help bring Closure, Gratitude, and Respect to America’s senior-most Veterans by raising funds for Vets Roll.  You can find more about this organization by viewing www.vetsroll.org

Operation A.L.F. needs your help!!!

Operation A.L.F. (American Legion Family) is a program to help the children of  Deploying Service Men and Women cope with the deployment.  While nothing can replace a mother or father in uniform deploying halfway across the world, this cute and cuddly pup can often soften the pains of the separation.
There are several ways to help with Operation A.L.F.:
  • Fundraise and/or Donate to the program to ensure the plush pups can be provided to the children of every deploying serviceman and servicewoman.  There are indications there may be several deployments this fall, we want to be able to support all of them.
  • Alert Detachment if you are aware of a soldier being deployed.  Whether it is a large group deploying or just a single person, Detachment will help coordinate the effort to provide an A.L.F for every child.  Please be our eyes and ears to help ensure we do not miss any child.
  • Volunteer to help with distribution of A.L.F. at a deployment.  While we can not guarantee everyone will be able to help with the distribution, we do want/need some local engagement at Deployments.

Online Membership Renewals coming - need updated Squadron Information

Plans are being made to allow members to renew their dues online this fall at www.MySAL.org.  But for this to be successful and beneficial to a squadron the following two pieces of information need to be provided by each Squadron:
  • Current Squadron Officer Information
  • Current Squadron Dues.
Current Squadron Dues is vitally important!
The amount to report is the TOTAL amount collected per member:  National ($5) + State ($7) + what the Squadron keeps.

So if your Squadron dues is $20.00, show it as $20.00 so your Squadron will receive back $8.00 per member.

If we do not have your dues, when your members renew online the system will only collect $12.00.  Your Squadron will be out the extra you charge, or you will have to separately contact your members to collect the difference.

All this information can be provided to Detachment Headquarters via an on-line form.  Go to “www.wisal.org”, hover over “Resources” to show the drop down menu, select “Squadron Information Form”.  Fill out that form and submit. Thank you in advance for updating this important information.

Celebration of Freedom - Sept 24th and 25th

The 3rd Annual Celebration of Freedom will be held September 24-25, 2021 at Legion Headquarters, 2930 American Legion Drive, Portage, WI.

In the first 2 years, this statewide community event has raised over $70,000 for Wisconsin American Legion Programs. What can we do with $70,000? It could sponsor over 140 Veterans to Camp, help thousands of Veterans and their families meet their financial needs during hard times, annually send 54 Legion All-Stars to play at Miller Park or send over 200 Boys to Badger Boys State to name a few.

This is a STATE-WIDE LEGION FAMILY community event that will feature New York's 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit, live entertainment, food and drink, obstacle course and more.

Commander's & Adjutant's Corner

A couple notes for the Commanders and Adjutants in each Squadron:
  • 2022 Membership Cards and Roster were sent to your Post’s Mailing Addresses.  Please check with your Post Commander/Adjutant if you have not received this packet.  Mailing to the Post Address was chosen due to issues last year with old/incorrect information for Squadron Commanders and/or Adjutants.
  • Please ensure someone has submitted your updated Officer Information.   Even if there was not a change, please just resubmit as is.  That submission will confirm the information is still accurate.
  • Please make sure you have also updated the Squadron Dues.  The amount to report is the TOTAL amount collected per member:  National ($5) + State ($7) + what the Squadron keeps.

2022 National Convention in Milwaukee

Planning for the 50th National Convention, which is being held in Milwaukee August 26-28th, is underway.
For The Sons of The American Legion, a National Convention has three key purposes:
  • To celebrate all the great work the organization is doing at all levels
  • To Elect the next set of National Officers
  • To conduct necessary business via the National Executive Committee.
This is going to be a great opportunity for all Wisconsin Squadron members to participate in a   National Convention.  More information will be shared with all Wisconsin Squadrons later this year.
